Toone and Kelly left out as Wiegman names Lionesses squad for Greece play-off

Sarina Wiegman has named a 23-player England squad for the Women's World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece, with Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly omitted and Chelsea's Lexi Potter earning a first senior call-up.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has named a 23-player squad for the Lionesses’ Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece, with Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly both left out, BBC Sport reported on Tuesday.

Toone, 27, misses out after an inconsistent start to the season, while Kelly, 28, is also omitted. Chelsea midfielder Lexi Potter, 20, earns her first senior call-up.

England face Greece over two legs: the first in Heraklion, Crete, on Friday 9 October (17:30 BST), with the return at Leicester’s King Power Stadium on Tuesday 13 October (19:30 BST). Victory would take the European champions into December’s second round of the play-offs, competing for a place at next summer’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Captain Leah Williamson returns after missing June’s fixtures — the 4-0 defeat by Spain and the 3-0 win over Ukraine. Uncapped Liverpool defender Grace Fisk and London City Lionesses forward Freya Godfrey are also included, while 18-year-old midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson, who joined North Carolina Courage in the summer, is back in the squad.

Also omitted were Chelsea’s Aggie Beever-Jones and Arsenal pair Lotte Wubben-Moy and Taylor Hinds.

“We have great respect for Greece, but our expectations of ourselves are clear,” Wiegman said, as reported by The Guardian. “We are here to win these two games, deliver strong performances, and move one step closer to securing our place at the World Cup.”
