Alexander Isak withdraws from Sweden squad with toe injury, returns to Liverpool

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has withdrawn from Sweden duty with a toe injury sustained in the 2-1 Nations League win over Romania, with the club describing it as minor.

Liverpool’s Alexander Isak has withdrawn from Sweden duty through injury, the club has confirmed.

Isak picked up a toe injury in Sweden’s 2-1 Nations League win over Romania in Stockholm on Friday night, a game in which he scored the opener. He completed the match but is now set to return to Merseyside for assessment.

“Alexander Isak is to return to Liverpool from international duty due to a minor injury,” read a club statement. “The striker will not be involved in Sweden’s three remaining fixtures in the current international break and will now be assessed by club medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.”

The injury came after Isak was stamped on in the second half, according to Brit Brief, which carried a photo shared by Sportbladet showing his foot visibly bloodied.

Passing through the mixed zone afterwards, Isak downplayed the problem but admitted the blow had been painful: “It was a real blow,” he told reporters. “You can see it. It was a real punch. Those of you who have played may know that it takes a few minutes before it releases, but it was okay.”

Liverpool’s season resumes when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday, October 11, and Isak’s availability for that fixture is now in doubt.
