Unranked Auburn stunned No. 1 Georgia 27-24 at home in Athens on Saturday, winning on a last-second 34-yard field goal by Alex McPherson — the first time in 36 years that the No. 1 team in college football has lost in consecutive weeks, after unranked Oklahoma beat then-No. 1 Texas 27-24 last week, per NBC Sports.

The Tigers entered as three-touchdown underdogs and fell 14-0 behind on Georgia’s first two possessions before scoring 24 consecutive points behind quarterback Byrum Brown, who threw for one touchdown and ran for another, finishing 15 of 26 for 150 yards with 115 rushing yards on 26 carries.

Georgia levelled the game at 24 with 2:58 to play on a 4-yard pass from Gunner Stockton to London Humphreys, then drove for a game-winning field goal — but Stockton fumbled near midfield, handing Auburn the final drive. A roughing-the-passer penalty on Georgia’s Gabe Harris Jr. for a late hit on Brown with 15 seconds left moved the Tigers 15 yards to the Bulldogs’ 19, setting up McPherson’s winner.

Stockton finished 22 of 34 for 272 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The loss leaves the SEC with no unbeaten teams.

It is Auburn’s first win over Georgia since 2017 and the first time the Tigers have beaten a top-ranked Bulldogs side since 1942. “I’m grateful for our guys, our coaches, our fan base that’s been through a lot,” first-year Auburn head coach Alex Golesh said afterwards. “We’re going to build Auburn back to where everybody wants it. One game at a time.”
