Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to miss “anywhere from three to six weeks” with his thumb injury, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports via NBC Sports on Sunday — a longer absence than the initial two-to-four-week prognosis, suggesting the injury is worse than first expected.

Testing revealed no ligament or tendon damage in Mayfield’s thumb, Schefter reported. His return will depend on how quickly he can grip the ball — “typically the first step in throwing a football”, NBC Sports noted.

Mayfield dislocated his right thumb, his throwing hand, late in the Buccaneers’ 23-16 Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He has been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 4 home game against the Green Bay Packers, USA Today reports.

Head coach Todd Bowles had said on September 28 that Mayfield would miss a minimum of three weeks, with an MRI showing no additional damage, Reuters reported.

Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will draw the start in Mayfield’s place. Daniels, 23, from Kansas, went 0-for-3 with an interception in his NFL debut in relief against the Vikings — and will make his first NFL start on Sunday. The Buccaneers dropped to 0-3 with the loss to Minnesota, the last remaining winless team in the NFC.
