The Big 12 admitted its replay crew wrongly ended Saturday's Notre Dame-BYU game, saying one second should have remained and Notre Dame should have had one more play.
The Big 12 has admitted its replay officiating crew wrongly ended Saturday’s Notre Dame-BYU game, saying one second should have remained on the clock when the final play ended. (https://www.on3.com/news/big-12-admits-clock-error-notre-dame-vs-byu-says-there-should-have-been-1-second-left/)
The admission came in a late Saturday night statement following a review of the final play at LaVell Edwards Stadium, where No. 8 BYU beat No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24. With three seconds to go, CJ Carr threw to Jaden Greathouse, but the pass went out the back of the end zone and fell incomplete. Multiple replay angles appeared to show the stadium clock at 0:01, yet the officials ended the game. The Big 12 said “time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew”, and will conduct “a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week’s games”. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said replay should have checked whether the in-stadium clock was at :01, and that if so “ND would have had one more play”. Fox analyst Mike Pereira, who spoke with the Big 12 replay centre, said “it’s pretty obvious here there is a second left on the clock and there should’ve been another play for Notre Dame”. It is the second high-profile clock error of the 2026 season, after Michigan was granted one more second against Western Michigan in Week 1 before Bryce Underwood’s game-winning Hail Mary.
