Brandon McNulty ends America's 33-year wait for men's road race world title

Brandon McNulty won the elite men's road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, the first American man in 33 years to take the rainbow jersey.

Brandon McNulty won the elite men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal on Sunday, ending a 33-year wait for an American man to wear the rainbow jersey.

The 28-year-old from Phoenix launched his attack with 32 km of the 273.4 km course remaining, built a lead of more than a minute, and held off the chasing field to cross the line in 6 hours, 17 minutes and 4 seconds — 13 seconds clear of Australia’s Michael Matthews. Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands took bronze, with fellow Americans Quinn Simmons fourth and Matteo Jorgenson eighth.

McNulty, who rides for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, becomes the first American man to win the world road title since Lance Armstrong in 1993, and only the third after Greg LeMond (1983 and 1989). Two-time defending champion Tadej Pogacar was absent, still recovering from a crash suffered last month.

“I’m really at a loss for words. Until the last 300 metres I didn’t believe it, I was so tired,” said McNulty. “I knew something could happen but it would take a miracle. I guess today, a miracle happened.”

The victory caps a fine week in Montreal for McNulty, who won the Montreal Grand Prix on the same roads last year and was fourth in the championship time trial.
