Liverpool fight back from behind to win 2-1 at nine-man Brentford

Liverpool recovered from a 3-0 drubbing at Manchester City to win 2-1 at Brentford, with Alexander Isak and Victor Munoz overturning Keane Lewis-Potter's opener after Brentford finished with nine men.

Liverpool bounced back from last week’s 3-0 Premier League drubbing by Manchester City with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Brentford on Saturday, 17 October 2026.

Keane Lewis-Potter gave the home side the lead in the 44th minute, but the game turned deep into first-half stoppage time when Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off for an attempted headbutt. Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak completed Liverpool’s comeback with second-half goals to seal the three points.

Brentford’s afternoon deteriorated further in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt collected a second yellow card, leaving the hosts to finish the match with nine men.

“Super-happy with the win. It’s a tough ground, it’s a tough team to play, especially away from home. We knew it was going to be a bit of a scrappy game and it’s important to come out on top,” Isak said. “I think there’s still lots to improve. We’re taking steps and we’re grabbing points on the way which is important.”

Winger Bradley Barcola, signed from Paris St Germain in a deal worth up to £123 million, started on the left and was a constant threat despite spurning two gilt-edged chances — including one breakaway where he lifted his effort over the onrushing goalkeeper and wide.

Barcola’s pace and trickery offer Liverpool another route to unlock packed defences following Mohamed Salah’s departure at the end of last season, with opponents increasingly deploying five across the back against the leading sides.
