Brewers edge Padres 3–2 in NLDS Game 1 as Contreras and Chourio go deep

William Contreras hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh and Jackson Chourio tied the game with a two-run shot in the third as Milwaukee took a 1–0 NLDS lead at American Family Field.

The Milwaukee Brewers took a 1–0 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series on Saturday, beating the San Diego Padres 3–2 in Game 1 at American Family Field.

San Diego struck first, scoring twice in the second inning: Luis Campusano singled home Xander Bogaerts, and Ethan Salas crossed the plate on Jake Cronenworth’s fielder’s choice. Milwaukee answered in the bottom of the third when Jackson Chourio hit a two-run homer off Robbie Ray that also scored Garrett Mitchell, tying the game at 2–2. It was Chourio’s fifth career postseason home run, a new franchise record.

Catcher William Contreras broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh, sending a solo shot 406 feet to centre field for the 3–2 lead. The Brewers held on from there, and return to American Family Field on Sunday with a chance to take a 2–0 lead before the series moves to San Diego.

Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski made his first career postseason start, striking out six over four innings while allowing two earned runs; his first pitch to Fernando Tatis Jr. was a 104.8mph fastball. Ray lasted 2.2 innings for the Padres, giving up two earned runs with one strikeout.

Milwaukee won a major-league-best 103 games in the regular season and earned a bye to this round, while San Diego swept the Chicago Cubs in the best-of-three wild-card series. Game 2 is Sunday at 4 p.m. ET in Milwaukee. More: NLDS coverage.
