Brighton & Hove Albion demolished Crystal Palace 5-0 in the M23 derby at the Amex on Sunday, storming into a 3-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes before completing the rout after the break and climbing to second in the Premier League, according to the Sky Sports match report.

Palace defender Jaydee Canvot glanced Pascal Gross’s free-kick into his own net after four minutes, and Diego Gómez then scored one of the great Premier League goals from the halfway line in the seventh minute. The Paraguayan’s 51-metre strike was the furthest-range goal in the competition since Wayne Rooney’s 58-metre effort for Everton against West Ham in November 2017, as talkSPORT reported. Yasin Ayari swept home a third three minutes later.

Charalampos Kostoulas added the fourth on 48 minutes and substitute Jack Hinshelwood completed the scoring on 84 minutes. Palace’s misery was compounded by the woodwork: substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta struck the crossbar and Jefferson Lerma nodded against the post, The Times reported.

The win was Brighton’s fourth straight in the Premier League and took them to 16 points from seven games, second behind Manchester City, while Palace dropped to 14th, TribalFootball noted. Brighton have scored 14 goals in their last four matches in all competitions without conceding, The Times added.
