Bulgarian football club owner Iliyan Filipov shot dead in Plovdiv
Iliyan Filipov, president and majority shareholder of FC Botev Plovdiv and founder of transport giant PIMK, was shot dead at around 1am at a property he owned in Plovdiv.
Iliyan Filipov, president and majority shareholder of Bulgarian top-flight club FC Botev Plovdiv, was shot dead in the city of Plovdiv in the early hours of Wednesday, Bulgarian media reported.
Filipov, founder and manager of PIMK — Bulgaria’s largest transport company and one of the ten biggest in Europe — was killed at around 1am local time at a property he owned, according to the reports.
A statement from Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry said a report of a man who had been shot was received at around 1am at an address in a Plovdiv neighbourhood. His death was established at the scene, and an investigation into the serious crime has been launched.
Police blocked the main entry and exit points of Plovdiv, which lies about 90 miles southeast of the capital, Sofia.
“We are actively pursuing all possible leads,” Plovdiv District Prosecutor Vanya Hristeva said in a briefing.
Filipov was also closely associated with the construction of the Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv, the home ground of Botev Plovdiv.
