PROVO, Utah — No. 8 BYU stunned No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday night, with quarterback Bear Bachmeier accounting for all four Cougars touchdowns and the defence producing a last-second stand, USA Today reported.

Bachmeier threw the go-ahead score — a six-yard pass to tight end Walker Lyons with 1:47 remaining — to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive, the South Bend Tribune’s live account recorded. He also ran for two touchdowns and caught another, theScore reported.

Notre Dame had fought back from a 21-10 half-time deficit to lead 24-21 on Jonaz Walton’s three-yard touchdown run with 9:31 left, Sportsnet reported. But CJ Carr’s final drive stalled at the BYU nine, and his last pass — intended for Jaden Greathouse — fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired, with no flag thrown, the Tribune and theScore reported.

The win moved BYU to 7-0 and dropped Notre Dame to 6-1, the Irish’s first loss of the season. The crowd of 65,179 was the largest at the stadium since Notre Dame’s last visit in 2004, USA Today reported. It was a brutal Saturday for the top seven: No. 1 Georgia, No. 5 Indiana, No. 6 Texas and No. 7 Alabama also lost, and theScore noted Notre Dame became the fifth top-seven team to fall — the first such Saturday since the AP poll began in 1936.
