Runner dies after taking part in Cardiff Half Marathon, organisers confirm
A runner has died after taking part in Sunday's Cardiff Half Marathon, organisers Run4Wales confirmed on Monday, withholding the participant's identity at the family's request.
A runner has died after taking part in Sunday’s Cardiff Half Marathon, event organisers Run4Wales confirmed on Monday.
The death occurred during the 23rd edition of Wales’ largest mass-participation athletics event, which saw around 30,000 runners take to the streets of the capital on Sunday, October 4. Medical teams stationed along the 13.1-mile route and hospital teams provided emergency treatment before the runner was transferred to hospital.
Run4Wales released an official statement on Monday confirming the participant’s death and praised “the event and hospital medical teams who reacted with great speed and professionalism”. No further personal details will be made public, with the runner’s identity, age and home town withheld in accordance with the family’s wishes.
The tragedy follows previous medical emergencies at the event. In 2024, 37-year-old Stephen Jenkins died in hospital after collapsing shortly after crossing the finish line, while in 2019 two runners, Ben McDonald and Dean Fletcher, died after suffering cardiac arrests near the end of the course.
