Bankrupt Lawrence Dallaglio to sell 2003 World Cup winner's medal at auction

Former England captain Lawrence Dallaglio is to sell his 2003 Rugby World Cup winner’s medal after being declared bankrupt.

The 54-year-old has put a number of items from his career up for auction, including medals, trophies and caps. The World Cup medal is expected to raise between £50,000 and £80,000, while the collection as a whole carries an estimated value of £180,000.

Dallaglio was one of the stars of the England side that beat Australia in the 2003 World Cup final. Other items going under the hammer include a British and Irish Lions cap, his 1993 World Cup Sevens winner’s medal and a 2003 Six Nations Championship winner’s medal.

Speaking on The High Performance podcast earlier this month about his bankruptcy, Dallaglio said: “As a result of getting divorced, I was made bankrupt. I had some financial problems - I could’ve done things a lot better.”

He also said he sought therapy after his divorce and bankruptcy left him wallowing in “self-pity”.

The auction takes place at Budd’s in Northamptonshire on 13 October.
