Davidovich Fokina stuns Zverev in three sets to reach Shanghai Masters final

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came from a set down to beat world No 2 Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the Shanghai Masters semi-final on Saturday, reaching his first Masters 1000 final.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced one of the upsets of the season on Saturday, coming from a set down to beat world No 2 Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and reach the final of the Shanghai Masters.

The 27-year-old Spaniard, ranked world No 26, lost the first set after being broken at 5-5 but dominated thereafter, winning 64 of his 83 service points and saving two of three break points. He broke Zverev to seal the second set 6-4 and carried the momentum through the decider, Tennis Temple reported.

Davidovich Fokina had won only one of his seven previous meetings with Zverev before Saturday’s semi-final at the Masters 1000 event.

The defeat ends Zverev’s campaign in Shanghai, where he had been the favourite to triumph following Carlos Alcaraz’s shock third-round exit. He collected 400 ranking points for reaching the semi-finals, taking his total to 10,070 — 880 points behind world No 1 Jannik Sinner.

Davidovich Fokina will play for the title on Sunday against the winner of Saturday’s second semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Jodar.
