Spain extend 38-game unbeaten run with 3-2 win over England at Wembley

Oyarzabal's late winner settled a Wembley thriller as Spain beat England 3-2 on the opening night of Nations League League A Group 3.

Spain came from behind to beat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday night in the opening match of UEFA Nations League League A Group 3, the first fixture for both sides since the 2026 World Cup.

Lamine Yamal gave the visitors a second-minute lead before Anthony Gordon levelled in the 36th minute and Harry Kane’s header put England 2-1 ahead. Kane then missed a 52nd-minute penalty — hitting the bar after his plant foot slipped, with the kick chalked off anyway as a double-touch following VAR’s award for Rodri’s foul on Jude Bellingham. It was his first England penalty miss since the 2022 World Cup.

Substitute Álex Baena curled home the equaliser in the 59th minute after Nico O’Reilly lost possession, and Mikel Oyarzabal — scorer of Spain’s Euro 2024 final winner against England — lifted the ball over James Trafford in the 73rd minute after Baena’s through ball got him away from Ezri Konsa.

Trafford started ahead of Jordan Pickford, with Thomas Tuchel rotating his goalkeepers across the four Nations League fixtures: “James gets two consecutive matches because he deserves it. Pickers gets the other two matches.”

The result keeps Spain unbeaten in 38 normal-time matches. England next play Czechia in Prague on Tuesday 29 September.
