England thrash Sri Lanka by 223 runs at The Oval to seal ODI series 2–1

Tom Banton's maiden ODI century — 126 off 105 balls — powered England to 355 for 7 at The Oval before Sri Lanka collapsed to 132 all out, as England clinched the three-match series 2–1.

England sealed a 2–1 one-day international series win over Sri Lanka on Sunday, skittling the tourists for 132 at The Oval to win the decider by 223 runs.

Tom Banton was the architect with a maiden ODI century, compiling 126 from 105 balls — including 16 fours and five sixes — as England posted 355 for 7 after captain Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bat. It was Banton’s first century in 10 ODIs, coming fresh from his 73 in Sri Lanka’s series-levelling win at Headingley on Thursday.

Banton shared a 150-run third-wicket stand with Brook (77), who was dropped on seven by wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis and went on to make a 49-ball fifty before miscuing Asitha Fernando to mid-off. Jordan Cox, recalled after Jos Buttler’s hamstring injury at Headingley, seized his chance with 76 from the lower order before falling off the penultimate ball of the innings.

England had suffered an early wobble — Ben Duckett bowled for a duck by Dilshan Madushanka and Joe Root falling lbw for a sluggish 18 — but Banton’s superb innings carried the hosts to an imposing total.

Sri Lanka’s chase never got going, and the innings ended at 132 all out in 29.1 overs when Eshan Malinga was caught off Will Jacks, completing a dominant home series win for England.
