Esha Singh wins Asian Games silver in women's 25m pistol after dramatic shoot-off with Xiao Jiaruixuan

India's Esha Singh clinched silver in the women's 25m pistol at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Monday, finishing level on 38 points with China's Xiao Jiaruixuan before losing the gold-medal shoot-off.

India’s Esha Singh won the silver medal in the women’s 25m pistol at the Asian Games on Monday, losing a dramatic gold-medal shoot-off to China’s Xiao Jiaruixuan at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.

The 21-year-old registered a joint-high score of 38 in the final after 10 series, matching Xiao and equalling the Games record set by China’s Liu Rui at Hangzhou 2023. She then missed out on gold after conceding the second round of the shoot-off, with Xiao edging her 3-2 in the final tie-breaker. North Korea’s Kim Hyon Suk took bronze with 34 points.

The silver is Esha’s third at the Asian Games, after silver in the 10m air pistol individual and team events at Hangzhou 2023. The reigning world No. 1 also holds the women’s 25m pistol world record of 43 hits, set at the Munich World Cup in May.

Esha had qualified only narrowly for the final, finishing eighth with 580-22x, and opened the medal round with a perfect five hits from five shots. Tied on 34 with Kim after the sixth series of Stage 2, she survived a three-series shoot-off — interrupted by a technical problem — to reach the gold-medal contest, prevailing three hits to Kim’s two in the decisive round.

The medal was Esha’s first of the ongoing Games; she had finished 15th in qualifying for the 10m air pistol and failed to make that final.
