Fernando Alonso ends F1 retirement speculation with new Aston Martin deal for 2027

Fernando Alonso has ended months of speculation about his Formula 1 future, with Aston Martin confirming on Tuesday that the double world champion has signed a new contract to race for the team in 2027, the team announced.

Lance Stroll has also extended his contract, meaning Aston Martin will keep the same driver pairing for a fifth consecutive season beyond the current 2026 campaign — the most experienced driver line-up in Formula One, according to the team.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,” Alonso said. “I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.”

Alonso, 45, had been openly frustrated with the current regulations, calling fast corners “charging stations” for the batteries and saying the challenge of driving the cars had been reduced. He announced the news in a video message: “I will retire from F1… but not yet,” Crash.net reports.

Since joining Aston Martin in 2023, Alonso has competed in 85 Grands Prix, scored eight podiums and taken two second-place finishes. Stroll will enter his 11th Formula One season in 2027, with more than 200 starts and three podiums since joining the team in 2019.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey,” said team owner Lawrence Stroll. “We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives.”
