Greece stun Germany 1-0 in Augsburg as Jürgen Klopp suffers first defeat

Substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis struck in the 74th minute as Greece beat Germany 1-0 in Augsburg — their first-ever victory over the Germans — leaving Jürgen Klopp still without a win after two games in charge.

Greece beat Germany 1-0 in Augsburg on Sunday night to record the first victory over Germany in their history, leaving new national coach Jürgen Klopp still without a win after two games in charge.

Substitute Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the winner in the 74th minute, cutting onto Christos Tzolis’s pass and sending a shot in via a deflection off Joshua Kimmich at the WWK Arena.

It was Klopp’s first home match as Germany coach, and his first defeat — following the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in his debut game, when Germany conceded a 92nd-minute equaliser.

Germany dominated long spells and had 16 shots, but could not beat Konstantinos Tzolakis. Hoffenheim debutant Bambasé Conté forced a strong save from the Greek goalkeeper early in the second half before Kimmich’s free-kick was tipped over, while Karim Adeyemi had the best of Germany’s first-half chances.

Greece almost led earlier when a Kimmich error let Fotis Ioannidis through, but the striker missed from close range. Kourbelis, on for Christos Zafeiris just after the hour, needed only 16 minutes to decide it.

Greece have maximum points from their first two games after coming from behind to beat Serbia in their opener, while Germany have one point and face Serbia in Munich on Thursday at 8.45pm CEST.
