Giants trade for Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy for 2027 fifth-round pick
The New York Giants acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick on Monday, six days after starter Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The deal comes less than a week after the Giants learned starter Jaxson Dart would miss at least the rest of the regular season. Dart had surgery last week on his left knee after being injured early in a loss at the Los Angeles Rams. Veteran Jameis Winston started Sunday’s 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans — despite no touchdowns and just 238 yards of offence — and coach John Harbaugh said Winston would start again this Sunday against Arizona while hinting the Giants would not stand pat.
McCarthy, 23, was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but lost the starting job in Minnesota to Kyler Murray and had fallen behind Carson Wentz on the depth chart. He started 10 games last season, completing 57.6 per cent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, having missed his rookie season after injuring his right knee. Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley said the trade was “the best decision” for the club and that McCarthy had not requested a move.
The trade reunites McCarthy with a Harbaugh: he won the national championship at Michigan in his final college season playing for John’s younger brother Jim.
