India and Pakistan reach Asian Games cricket semi-finals after rain washes out quarter-finals

Rain washed out both quarter-finals at Korogi Sports Park on Monday, sending India and Pakistan through to the Asian Games cricket semi-finals on ICC T20I rankings without a ball being bowled.

India and Pakistan advanced to the men’s cricket semi-finals at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday without facing a single delivery, after rain washed out both quarter-finals at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan.

India’s quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss as persistent rain left the outfield unplayable. Under tournament rules the higher-ranked side progresses, so world No.1 India moved through while 10th-ranked Afghanistan were eliminated. It is the second successive Asian Games campaign in which Afghanistan’s knockout hopes ended against India by washout — in Hangzhou in 2023, the rain-ruined final left Afghanistan with silver.

Pakistan’s quarter-final against Hong Kong, China was also abandoned without a toss earlier in the day. Sixth-ranked Pakistan progressed past 24th-ranked Hong Kong, China.

India, the defending champions, will play the winner of the Nepal vs Sri Lanka quarter-final in Thursday’s second semi-final; Pakistan await the winner of the fourth quarter-final in the first. The medal matches are scheduled for Saturday, October 3.

“Yes, rain is there, but that is the reason we can’t give up… we have to be prepared mentally irrespective of whatever the situation is going to be,” India captain Shreyas Iyer had said at Sunday’s press conference.
