Gill's record 223* powers India's historic 406-run chase against West Indies in Guwahati

Captain Shubman Gill produced one of the greatest innings in ODI history on Wednesday, smashing an unbeaten 223 off 133 balls as India chased down a target of 406 to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. India, who chose to field first, reached 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs, with 39 balls to spare, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series; the final match is in New Chandigarh on Saturday. Gill reached his double hundred in 117 balls, the fastest in ODI history, breaking Ishan Kishan’s 126-ball mark, and hit 26 fours and eight sixes. His 223 not out is the highest score in an ODI chase, the second double century ever scored while chasing after Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan in 2023, and his second ODI double hundred — making him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to register multiple double centuries in men’s ODIs. Rohit Sharma gave Gill ideal support with 101 off 75 balls, his hundred coming off 72 deliveries, as the openers put on 255 — India’s biggest partnership in a chase. During the innings Rohit became the seventh batter and third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to cross 12,000 ODI runs, reaching the mark in 282 innings, the second-fastest ever. West Indies had posted 405 for 7, their highest-ever ODI total and the highest score in a losing cause, with three hundreds — John Campbell 101 off 68, Shai Hope 104 off 94 and Amir Jangoo 114 off 77.
