Ja'Marr Chase ruled out with concussion after facemask tackle as Jaguars beat Bengals 22-17
Cincinnati's star receiver was dragged down by his facemask by Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones, then hit by linebacker Ventrell Miller with his helmet striking the turf. He was evaluated for a concussion at half-time and ruled out for the second half.
Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been ruled out with a concussion after a second-quarter hit in Sunday’s 22-17 home defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Paycor Stadium.
Chase caught a four-yard dump-off pass from Joe Burrow before Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones grabbed and pulled his facemask, drawing a 15-yard penalty. While falling to the ground, Chase was hit by Jacksonville linebacker Ventrell Miller, and his helmet struck the turf. He remained down before receiving medical attention on the field, walking to the blue medical tent and then to the locker room under his own power with a towel draped over his head.
The Bengals first announced Chase was being evaluated for a possible concussion and was questionable to return; shortly after the second half began, they confirmed he was ruled out with a concussion. The CBS broadcast crew reported that NFL replay officials judged Chase was not defenseless when Miller hit him, so no further penalty was called.
Chase, 26, left with three catches for 26 yards, taking his season tally to 21 receptions for 211 yards and three touchdowns over four games. The two-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection has 541 catches for 7,048 yards and 57 touchdowns across six NFL seasons, all with Cincinnati.
The injury compounds a thin receiver room: the Bengals were already without Andrei Iosivas, who is on injured reserve with a thumb injury. Jacksonville’s win moves the Jaguars to 3-1; Cincinnati falls to 2-2 after entering Sunday 2-1.
