Eagles sign Joe Milton off Cowboys practice squad with Jalen Hurts sidelined

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles are signing quarterback Joe Milton off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, NFL Network reported on Friday, after starter Jalen Hurts was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the visiting Carolina Panthers.
Hurts was diagnosed on Thursday with a superficial blood clot in his calf, leaving fourth-year backup Tanner McKee — a 2023 sixth-round pick — to make just the third start of his career as the Eagles (2-3) try to snap a three-game losing streak.
Under NFL rules, signing Milton off another team’s practice squad requires Philadelphia to place him on its 53-man roster.
Milton, 26, was a sixth-round pick by New England in 2024 and appeared in one game for the Patriots that season, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score in a Week 18 win over Buffalo. He played four games off the Cowboys’ bench in 2025 — 15 of 24 for 183 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions — and has not played a snap in 2026.
The move follows the Eagles’ release last week of 38-year-old Andy Dalton, whose only pass attempt in the Week 3 loss at Chicago was intercepted. Rookie Cole Payton is also on the depth chart.
