Olympic champion Katy Marchant has retired from cycling at the age of 33, British Cycling announced on Monday, ending a 13-year career crowned by team sprint gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Marchant, Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane set a world record at the Paris Games on their way to Britain’s gold in the women’s team sprint. She also won individual sprint bronze on her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and the team title at the 2024 world championships, Reuters reported.
The Leeds-born sprinter returned to elite competition after the birth of her second child, Walter, and won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. She had aimed to race at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics but decided to step away instead, The Times reported.
“My dreams came true, and I feel incredibly lucky that it has been my life for the last 13 years,” Marchant said in a statement on British Cycling’s website.
She is unsure of her future plans beyond helping her husband Rob on the family farm near Leeds in the short term.
