Eagles great Lane Johnson announces retirement after 14 NFL seasons
Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson has announced his retirement after 14 NFL seasons, saying he needs to prioritise his mental health, children and family.

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson has announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons, ending one of the most decorated offensive line careers in franchise history.
Johnson, 36, announced the decision on Tuesday in a statement posted on X, saying he had hoped to complete one final season but had determined he needed to prioritise his mental health, children and family. “I have given it my all for 14 years; season after season pushing my body to the max and tirelessly working my craft to not only live up to the legacy of the guys that came before me, but to set a new standard of success for the best franchise in all of sports,” he wrote (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/eagles/2026/10/06/lane-johnson-eagles-retires/92124380007/).
“I deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year; to take the field with my brothers for one last season,” Johnson continued. “But after a lot of reflection, I’ve realized that my personal and family priorities in my life have changed. Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 percent in the game. And right now my heart is telling me that it’s time to say goodbye to football.”
“Philadelphia will always be home,” he added, “and I will forever be an Eagle.”
The announcement came two days after Johnson was a surprise inactive for “personal reasons” in the Eagles’ 24-20 Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He started Philadelphia’s first three games of the season, and had said in August that 2026 would likely be his final year, citing his mother’s health and his children’s development (https://foxsports.com/stories/nfl/eagles-6-time-pro-bowl-ot-lane-johnson-retires-from-nfl-4-games-season).
Selected fourth overall in the 2013 NFL draft out of Oklahoma, Johnson spent his entire career in Philadelphia, starting all 171 regular-season games and 15 more in the postseason. He earned six Pro Bowl selections and five Associated Press All-Pro honours, won Super Bowls LII and LIX — the only offensive lineman in franchise history with two championships — and played on three NFC title teams. In 2024 he did not allow a single sack and surrendered only one quarterback hit across 451 pass-blocking opportunities (https://theeagleswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/eagles/2026/10/06/lane-johnson-career-stats-accolades-retirement/92124532007/).
Rookie Markel Bell started at right tackle in Johnson’s place against the Rams and is expected to take the role permanently (https://www.delawareonline.com/story/sports/nfl/eagles/2026/10/06/eagles-right-tackle-lane-johnson-announces-retirement-after-13-seasons/92124728007/).
