Manchester City lodge appeal as FA warns verdict has 'significant implications for integrity of the game'

Manchester City have lodged their appeal against the guilty verdict as the Football Association issued its first public reaction, confirming it has powers to take disciplinary action but will wait for the appeal to conclude before deciding whether to act.

Manchester City have lodged their appeal against the independent commission’s guilty verdict, with the Premier League confirming on Friday that the club had appealed to the chair of the league’s independent judicial panel. The hearing will “remain private and confidential” until publication of the outcome is permitted.

The confirmation came as the Football Association issued its first public reaction to the verdict, saying the decision has “significant implications for the integrity of the game”. The FA said it was “carefully considering the decision and its implications and will take action where appropriate”, but declined further comment while proceedings “remain ongoing”. “We will, however, continue to monitor developments closely,” it added.

The FA confirmed it has powers to take disciplinary action against the club and key individuals, but will wait until the appeal process has concluded — which, under the Premier League’s rulebook, should be by the end of January — before deciding whether to act. In July it fined Chelsea £10m with a suspended two-window transfer ban after 74 admitted breaches of agent regulations.

The commission found City guilty of all charges of serious financial-rule breaches over nine seasons from 2009/10 to 2017/18, concluding the club used a “disguised funding scheme” and “sham contracts” to boost income by more than £900m, the Guardian reported.

City insist they are “innocent of the accusations”, arguing the verdict “contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe”, backed by “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence”.
