Man City beat Sunderland 5-3 in eight-goal Etihad thriller to keep perfect start
Enzo Fernandez's first City goal and Antoine Semenyo's double headlined a 5-3 win over Sunderland as Brian Brobbey's hat-trick came in vain at the Etihad.
Manchester City head into the first international break three points clear at the top of the Premier League after Antoine Semenyo’s double sealed an enthralling 5-3 home win over Sunderland, for whom Brian Brobbey grabbed a hat-trick, on Sunday.
A pulsating clash at a sunny Etihad Stadium saw Sunderland twice equalise, and the result was still in the balance until Erling Haaland got on the scoresheet late on to seal the points and maintain City’s 100 per cent start to the league season.
Enzo Fernandez stunned the visitors in the ninth minute, curling a free kick past Robin Roefs for his first goal since his record-equalling £125-million move from Chelsea. Brobbey levelled three minutes later from Enzo Le Fee’s pass, only for Rayan Cherki to restore City’s lead in the 29th minute. Brobbey equalised again from a Thomas Meunier assist, but Semenyo finished emphatically just before half-time and struck again in the 57th minute. Brobbey completed his hat-trick with a finishing touch to Nilson Angulo’s shot, becoming the first Sunderland player to score a Premier League hat-trick since Jermaine Defoe in 2016.
Haaland’s late fifth means he has now scored against every Premier League side he has faced. “Too many goals, I prefer 1-0 much better,” smiling City manager Enzo Maresca said afterwards, capping a seventh successive win in all competitions.
Elsewhere, Liverpool won 1-0 at Bournemouth through Alexander Isak’s second-half goal, while Leeds drew 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace.
