Mariota ruled out of Commanders' London game with knee injury as rookie Kaliakmanis steps in
Marcus Mariota, starting in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, left Washington's London game against the Colts with a right knee injury and was ruled out for the second half, forcing rookie third-stringer Athan Kaliakmanis into the game.
The Washington Commanders are down to their third-string quarterback after Marcus Mariota was ruled out of Sunday’s London game against the Indianapolis Colts with a right knee injury.
Mariota, making his second start in place of the injured Jayden Daniels, hurt his right knee on the team’s second offensive series at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His leg was caught underneath a Colts lineman — Laiatu Latu, according to Pro Football Talk — when he was sacked on third down in the red zone. The drive still ended in a 29-yard Drew Stevens field goal that put Washington 6-0 up.
The 32-year-old went to the blue medical tent and then walked to the locker room under his own power. After initially being listed as questionable to return, the Commanders ruled him out for the game as the teams came out for the second half. It is the same knee on which Mariota suffered an MCL sprain during the preseason.
Rookie seventh-round pick Athan Kaliakmanis, out of Rutgers, replaced Mariota — his first NFL action.
