Mathis Albert, 17, becomes youngest-ever USMNT scorer as USA beat Chile 4-2

Mathis Albert, 17 years and 131 days old, became the youngest scorer in United States men's national team history with a stoppage-time goal in the 4-2 friendly win over Chile in St. Louis.

Mathis Albert became the youngest scorer in United States men’s national team history on Tuesday night, netting in second-half stoppage time as the USA beat Chile 4-2 in an international friendly at Energizer Park in St. Louis.

The 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund forward pounced on Auston Trusty’s header back from Antonee Robinson’s free kick, scoring his first senior international goal in the 93rd minute. At 17 years and 131 days old, Albert took the record from former Dortmund team-mate Christian Pulisic, who was 17 years and 253 days old when he scored against Bolivia in May 2016.

Albert made his USMNT debut in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Peru. The hosts fell behind twice: Sebastian Berhalter struck in the 37th minute, Diego Ulloa levelled in first-half stoppage time and Maximiliano Gutiérrez put Chile ahead in the 49th. Julian Hall, 18, headed the equaliser two minutes later to become the youngest USMNT player to score in back-to-back games, and Chris Richards’s 72nd-minute header proved the winner.

“It feels amazing,” Albert said. “I didn’t even know until I went in the locker room, but it’s really good.” Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his young side’s resilience: “This type of game was priceless for the team and for the players.”

The night also marked the international farewell of Tim Ream, who confirmed his retirement before the match. He made 86 appearances since his 2010 debut and captained the side at the 2026 World Cup.
