Mbappé injures knee after scoring winner on Zidane's debut as France beat 10-man Türkiye

Kylian Mbappé scored the only goal of France's 1-0 Nations League win over Türkiye in Zinedine Zidane's first match as coach, then limped off with an apparent left-knee injury that threatens his place against Belgium and Italy.

Zinedine Zidane’s first match as France coach was overshadowed by an injury to his captain. Kylian Mbappé scored the only goal of a 1-0 Nations League victory over 10-man Türkiye at the Kocaeli Stadium in Izmit on Friday night, limping off with an apparent left-knee injury.

Mbappé struck in the 54th minute, set up by Michael Olise, controlling before firing low at the near post with his right foot. It was his 67th international goal in 107 caps for France, of whom he is the all-time top scorer.

He winced as teammates celebrated, briefly returned after treatment, then went down again and was replaced by Désiré Doué just before the hour mark. Zidane said Mbappé appeared to have hyperextended his knee as he planted to take the shot.

“He’s not doing well. Unfortunately, I think it’s going to be necessary for him to go back. We’re not going to take any risks,” Zidane told reporters. “He’s hyperextended his knee on the shot, and it doesn’t look good for him to be able to continue (with France).”

Türkiye, coached by Vincenzo Montella, finished with 10 men after goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir was sent off for handling outside his area following a VAR review. France, beaten by eventual winners Spain in the World Cup semi-finals, sit in Group A1 of the Nations League.

France travel to Brussels to face Belgium on Monday, before Zidane’s home debut against Italy on 2 October. Real Madrid are due back in action on 10 October against Valencia.
