Michigan benched struggling quarterback Bryce Underwood at half-time and turned to true freshman Tommy Carr — and the move salvaged the Wolverines’ season with a 21–18 comeback win over Penn State in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

Underwood went into the locker room trailing 3–0 after completing just 5 of 11 passes for 43 yards with two interceptions, the fifth and sixth picks of his season. Head coach Kyle Whittingham gave the game’s defining quote to CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell at the break: “We’ve got absolutely nothing going.”

Carr, greeted by a standing ovation, steadied the offense in the second half: 5-for-7 passing for 47 yards and four carries for 36 yards. After safety Chris Bracy’s strip-sack of Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht — recovered by Enow Etta with just over five minutes left — Carr scored his first career rushing touchdown from 12 yards out on a third-and-9 with under three minutes to play, stretching the lead to 21–11.

Penn State pulled one touchdown back, but Michigan recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the win. Bracy was electric all night with an interception, a forced fumble, a sack and a pass break-up, as Michigan won the turnover battle 3–2.

The win lifts the Wolverines to 4–2 (1–2 Big Ten) and ends a two-game losing streak. Michigan now hosts 5–1 Indiana at The Big House next week for a noon kickoff on Fox.
