Munich chosen as Germany's candidate to bid for Summer Olympics

The DOSB has picked Munich ahead of Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr as Germany's candidate to bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Munich has been chosen as Germany’s city to bid to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) voted on Saturday.

Delegates at the DOSB’s extraordinary general assembly at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden picked the Bavarian capital ahead of the Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr region as Germany’s national candidate for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“The winner is Munich,” German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said after being handed the envelope with the winning bid.

Launched as a race between four candidates, the choice narrowed to two after Berlin withdrew on Thursday and Hamburg’s withdrawal in May, the latter undermined by a negative public consultation.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said: “Germany has an Olympic candidate. Munich will enter the race on our behalf… Germany is ready for the Olympics.”

Bavarian premier Markus Söder told delegates: “We’re thinking about all of Germany… Thank you for the trust.”

The bid centres on the Olympic Park built for the 1972 Games, Munich’s last as host; Germany has launched seven unsuccessful bids since 1972. A late-2025 Munich referendum backed the bid with 66.4 percent in favour on 44 percent turnout.

The DOSB now begins a “continuous dialogue” with the IOC ahead of shortlisting in March 2027, with preferred hosts designated in late 2028 and final selection due mid 2029. More than 10 rivals have expressed interest, among them Indonesia, India, South Africa, Chile’s Santiago, Doha, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Los Angeles hosts 2028 and Brisbane 2032.
