Nasser Al-Attiyah wins Asian Games skeet team gold, completing unique Dakar double

Nasser Al-Attiyah has completed a unique sporting double, capturing shooting gold at the Asian Games in the same year he won the Dakar Rally.

The 55-year-old Qatari was part of the men’s skeet team that took gold on Wednesday in Nagoya, Japan, finishing ahead of Kuwait and India, AFP reported.

It was Al-Attiyah’s third Asian Games gold after triumphs in 2002 and 2010, and his sixth medal at the Games overall. He also won skeet bronze at the 2012 London Olympics.

The latest medal joins a collection of driving accolades that includes six Dakar Rally titles. He secured the most recent one earlier this year alongside Belgian co-driver Fabian Lurquin, at the wheel of a Dacia, after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 the previous day.

Al Jazeera described the feat as a first: no athlete had previously won a gold medal at the Asian Games in the same year as a Dakar Rally triumph — capping a rare career at the top of two sports, as a rally driver and an Olympic-medal-winning shooter.
