Olise's late wonder strike keeps Zidane's perfect start alive as Italy rout Turkey

Michael Olise came off the bench to score an 88th-minute winner as France beat Belgium 1-0 in Brussels, while Italy thrashed Turkey 4-1 in the UEFA Nations League.

Michael Olise struck two minutes from time to give France a 1-0 victory over Belgium in the UEFA Nations League at the King Baudouin Stadium on Monday, preserving Zinedine Zidane’s winning start as coach.

The Bayern Munich winger came on in the 77th minute for Bradley Barcola and settled a goalless contest in the 88th, setting off from inside his own half and surging from midway inside the Belgian half before a superb finish, Al Jazeera reported.

It was Zidane’s second win from two since succeeding Didier Deschamps after the World Cup, following the 1-0 win away to Turkey on 25 September. France top Group A1 with six points, three ahead of Belgium and Italy.

France were without captain Kylian Mbappe, who returned to Real Madrid for treatment after injuring his left knee while scoring the winner against Turkey. Zidane made nine changes, with Mike Maignan and Maxence Lacroix the only survivors, and handed debuts to Lucas Da Cunha and Esteban Lepaul. Desire Doue hit the bar and Da Cunha the post. It was a first home match in charge for Belgium’s Mark van Bommel, whose side made only two changes from the 2-0 win in Italy.

In Bursa, Italy bounced back from Friday’s 2-0 home defeat to Belgium with a 4-1 rout of Turkey. Alessandro Bastoni gave the visitors a ninth-minute lead from a corner, Davide Frattesi pounced on a rebound in the 22nd after Altay Bayindir parried Michael Kayode’s shot, and debutant Kayode made it 3-0 in the 27th. Baris Alper Yilmaz pulled one back for Turkey before Pio Esposito’s 50th-minute header restored the cushion.

France host Italy at the Stade de France on Friday — Zidane’s homecoming — before entertaining Belgium on 5 October.
