Neeru Dhanda smashes Asian record to win India's first women's trap gold

The 26-year-old from Jind, Haryana hit 28 of 30 targets in the women's trap final, shattering the Asian record of 24 — and earlier in the day had anchored India to the team silver.

Neeru Dhanda has scripted history for India at the Asian Games 2026, becoming the country’s first shooter to win an Asian Games gold medal in the women’s trap individual event, at the General Shooting Gallery in Aichi on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old from Jind, Haryana hit 28 of 30 targets in the eight-shooter final, smashing the previous Asian record of 24 — a mark set earlier this year by Chinese Taipei’s Liu Wan-Yu. China’s Sun Yunong took the silver with 26, while Kuwait’s Abdulmalik Hajar claimed bronze with 21.

Dhanda had topped qualification with 118, finishing joint top alongside Qatar’s Ray Bassil — a Games qualification record — before carrying that form into the final.

Earlier the same day, Dhanda had anchored India to the women’s trap team silver: her 118 combined with Aashima Ahlawat’s 106 and Manisha Keer’s 104 for a total of 328, behind gold medallists China on 346, with Kuwait taking bronze on 325. Ahlawat and Keer finished 16th and 23rd respectively in individual qualification and missed the final.

No Indian woman trap or skeet shooter had ever won an individual Asian Games medal before. India’s previous individual trap golds came from Randhir Singh in 1978 and Ronjan Sodhi in the men’s double trap in 2010. Dhanda had already made history in July, becoming the first Indian woman to win a shotgun World Cup trap gold, in Lonato, Italy.
