Nick Bosa ruled out multiple weeks as 49ers' defensive line takes another hit

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed star defensive end Nick Bosa will miss multiple weeks with a calf injury, ruling him out of Sunday's game against the Cardinals.

San Francisco 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa will miss multiple weeks after injuring his calf during Thursday’s practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Friday.

Bosa, who hurt himself during his pre-practice warm-up routine, has been ruled out of Sunday’s Week 3 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. Shanahan declined to give a precise timeline. “We can’t say exactly, but I’m guessing around a few weeks,” he told reporters, adding that he does not expect it to be a long-term issue.

The 49ers are still deciding whether to place Bosa on injured reserve, but the eight-player limit on in-season returns makes that a difficult call. “Because of the number we have on [injured reserve], we won’t be able to do all of them. So we’ve got to decide,” Shanahan said.

The setback compounds an injury crisis on the 49ers’ defensive front. Bosa and rookie Romello Height (hand surgery) were both ruled out for Sunday, alongside defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. Defensive tackles C.J. West (knee), Sam Okuayinonu (foot) and Alfred Collins (patellar tendon) are already on injured reserve. “Losing six out of the 10 D-linemen in the last two weeks … is a little unusual,” Shanahan said.

Bosa had returned this season from a torn ACL in his right knee suffered against the same Cardinals almost exactly a year ago, and has played 70 snaps over the first two games.
