Alex Ovechkin says 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin announced on Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the NHL, telling teammates the decision was made with his family over the summer.
Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, announced on Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his last in the league.
The Washington Capitals captain, 41, told his teammates in the locker room on Monday morning, ahead of the team’s home opener. He said he and his family decided over the summer that his 22nd season would be his final one. “I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it’s the right decision,” he said in a statement released by the Capitals, adding that he wanted to announce it before the first home game so he could thank the people who had supported him.
Ovechkin holds the NHL record with 929 regular-season goals after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894 in April 2025. He has 759 assists and 1,688 points in 1,575 games — all with Washington — and won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018. He has led the league in goals nine times, a record.
The Russian forward signed a one-year contract in July to return for a 22nd season. “Let’s enjoy it and do something special this year,” he told his teammates.
