The 24-year-old was arrested in August last year after reports that a woman was raped in Brixton, south London, on 30 March 2024, the Metropolitan Police said. He was charged on 23 July this year. He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on 11 September, where the case was sent to the crown court.
“The woman continues to be supported by specialist officers,” the Met said in a statement.
Essex confirmed on Wednesday that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract, had appeared in court “in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities” and was subject to “an immediate and ongoing suspension”. The club did not name Das and said it would make no further comment while legal proceedings continue.
Das, a right-handed batter, made his Essex debut in 2020 at the age of 18 and has made 60 appearances for the county. His most recent appearance came in a One-Day Cup match against Middlesex on 21 July — two days before he was charged. He has not played for the club since.
