Vieira's Senegal debut ends in 1-1 draw as Nigeria survive AFCON qualifying scare

Patrick Vieira's first game as Senegal coach ended 1-1 in Mozambique, Nigeria edged Madagascar 2-1 and Cape Verde lost 3-1 at Mali in Friday's AFCON qualifying openers.

Patrick Vieira’s debut as Senegal coach ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw away in Mozambique on Friday as his new side let a first-half lead slip in their opening Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Maputo.

Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson pounced on poor defending to hand Senegal a 32nd-minute lead, but Sporting’s Geny Catamo equalised in first-half added time with a rasping shot from outside the penalty area. The matchday one Group J fixture was moved to Maputo because no stadium in Senegal currently meets international standards. Vieira, who inherited the team from sacked Pape Thiaw, was without retired goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and injured striker Sadio Mane.

Nigeria survived a scare at home to Madagascar in Uyo, winning 2-1. Ehsan Kari put the visitors ahead after 16 minutes before two international debutants turned it around without injured star striker Victor Osimhen — George Ilenikhena, 20, burst through to equalise in first-half added time and substitute Moses Usor snatched the 65th-minute winner.

Cape Verde crashed 3-1 away to Mali in front of a wildly excited 50,000-strong crowd in Bamako. Martial Tia put Mali ahead within five minutes; a deflected Sidny Cabral free-kick levelled it before Dorgeles Nene restored the lead near half-time. Goalkeeper Vozinha then gifted Mali a third, dashing out to control a ball with his chest, losing possession and watching Nene strike into the unguarded net.

Elsewhere Egypt were held 0-0 at home by Angola, while Morocco and Algeria won comfortably against Gabon and Zambia respectively.
