Temba Bavuma and David Miller both struck centuries as South Africa defeated Australia by 32 runs in a high-scoring second one-day international in Johannesburg on Sunday, claiming the three-match series with a game to spare.
South Africa amassed 365 for nine in their 50 overs before bowling Australia out for 333 in 49.5 overs — their 19th ODI win in their last 25 meetings with their rivals.
Bavuma scored 103 from 116 balls for his sixth ODI century, while Miller was more explosive, striking nine sixes in a career-best 142 from 93 balls for his eighth ODI ton. The pair put on 156 for the fourth wicket after Aiden Markram had fallen to the first ball, superbly caught by Cooper Connolly above his head off Josh Hazlewood.
Australia made a lightning start to their reply as Mitch Marsh (84 from 53 balls) and Travis Head (84 from 76 balls) put on 130 in 17 overs. But the middle order was undone by South Africa’s spinners, with Keshav Maharaj (2-54), Bjorn Fortuin (2-70) and Markram (1-55) each completing ten overs. Xavier Bartlett’s 50 from 28 deliveries was not enough to save the tourists, who again missed Pat Cummins and lost Nathan Ellis to a side strain after he bowled only four overs.
Jack Edwards, playing his second ODI, was the pick of Australia’s bowlers with 5-67. The series concludes in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.
