Rain denies Nepal a shot at history as Sri Lanka advance to Asian Games cricket semi-finals

Persistent rain washed out Tuesday's men's cricket quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal at Korogi Sports Park in Nagoya, sending Sri Lanka — ninth in the ICC T20 rankings to Nepal's 14th — into the semi-finals without a ball bowled.

Persistent rain wiped out Tuesday’s men’s cricket quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal at the Korogi Sports Park in Nagoya, sending Sri Lanka into the Asian Games semi-finals without a ball being bowled.

The match was abandoned without even a toss, and under tournament rules the higher-ranked team advances — Sri Lanka sit ninth in the ICC T20 rankings, with Nepal 14th, the Kathmandu Post reported.

It was the third straight quarter-final lost to the weather. Pakistan and India had already progressed on Monday after their ties against Hong Kong and Afghanistan were washed out, while Bangladesh went through after their quarter-final against Malaysia was cancelled — meaning all four last-eight ties were settled by rain rather than cricket.

The results complete the semi-final line-up for Thursday, 1 October: Pakistan face Bangladesh at 5:30 AM IST before Sri Lanka take on defending champions India at 10 AM IST, according to the Times Now liveblog.

Nepal bow out with a campaign that promised more — a five-wicket win over Afghanistan and 149 for four in a rain-reduced 15 overs against Japan, a total built on half-centuries from Sundeep Jora and Lokesh Bam before the weather returned.
