No. 1 Texas survives at Neyland, edging No. 14 Tennessee 20-17

No. 1 Texas survived a late scare at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, beating No. 14 Tennessee 20-17 in a Week 4 top-15 college football showdown.

Texas (4-0) led 20-10 with under six minutes remaining after Raleek Brown’s four-yard touchdown run, his second score of the day. Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon answered with a 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 left, and the Volunteers recovered the onside kick — but Brandon’s Hail Mary fell incomplete on the final play of the game (Vols Wire).

The story of the afternoon was the Texas defensive front. Star edge rusher Colin Simmons sacked Brandon five times — the most by an individual player in an SEC conference game since at least 2001 — as the Longhorns totalled nine sacks and 11 tackles for loss while holding Tennessee to 216 yards of offence (Saturday Down South).

Brandon, a true freshman, completed 15 of 26 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown after briefly leaving in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. Tennessee’s only other touchdown came on Qua Moss’s 57-yard punt return in the third quarter (On3).

Brown finished with 17 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns for Texas, while quarterback Arch Manning managed the game in the second half. Tennessee (3-1) has not beaten the Longhorns since 1951.
