Valkyries stun defending champion Aces 71-60 in Game 1 of WNBA semifinals

Gabby Williams scored 25 points with 11 rebounds and the second-year Golden State Valkyries beat the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 71-60 in Game 1 of their WNBA semifinal series, holding Las Vegas to a season-low point total.

The second-year Golden State Valkyries keep making history. Gabby Williams had 25 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and the Valkyries beat the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 71-60 on Sunday in Game 1 of their best-of-five WNBA semifinal series at Chase Center in San Francisco, the Associated Press reported.

Golden State, which won the franchise’s first playoff series just 36 hours earlier, held the Aces to a season-low 60 points and out-rebounded them 52-25, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. Kiah Stokes added 14 rebounds and three blocks against her former team.

A’ja Wilson led Las Vegas with 24 points but shot 8-of-21 against constant double teams, while Chelsea Gray scored 16 and became the WNBA’s all-time playoff assist leader. The Aces lost guard Jewell Loyd to a left leg injury early in the third quarter; she did not return and was being evaluated, USA Today reported. Las Vegas was already without NaLyssa Smith, Stephanie Talbot and Dana Evans.

Williams scored 18 of her points in the first half as Golden State took control in front of a sellout “Ballhalla” crowd. Coach Natalie Nakase returned to the bench after being examined by a doctor Saturday following her collapse on the sideline in Friday’s series-clinching win. Game 2 is Wednesday night back at Chase Center, with a 6:30pm PT tip.
