Wallabies stun world champions South Africa 42-38 in Perth classic after four late yellow cards

Australia held on for a famous 42-38 win over South Africa at Optus Stadium despite finishing with 11 men after four yellow cards in the final 11 minutes.

PERTH: Australia stunned world champions South Africa 42-38 in a one-off Test at Optus Stadium on Sunday, holding on despite being reduced to 11 men for the closing minutes after four yellow cards in a chaotic finale.

Len Ikitau scored two tries as the Wallabies led 24-17 at half-time, and Max Jorgensen’s brilliant 60-metre solo try in the 64th minute stretched the lead to 42-17. Ben Donaldson and captain Harry Wilson crossed for the other Australian tries, with Ryan Lonergan kicking four conversions and three penalties.

Then came the cards. Wilson was sin-binned for a high tackle on Malcolm Marx, Lonergan followed for a cynical infringement that also yielded a penalty try, Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii was binned, and Hunter Paisami’s high tackle on Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu left Australia with 11 men.

South Africa, who made 13 changes from the side that beat New Zealand two weeks ago, rallied with late tries through Morne van den Berg and Ox Nche to close to 42-38 with seconds left. But the Wallabies survived, and the Boks coughed up an obstruction at the restart to seal a famous upset for the home side.

Johan Grobbelaar, Edwill van der Merwe and a penalty try were the Springboks’ other scores. South Africa lost two World Rugby ranking points but remain No 1; Australia climb to sixth. It was a difficult first outing as captain for Andre Esterhuizen.
