Warwickshire seal ninth County Championship title with crushing win over Leicestershire

Warwickshire thrashed Leicestershire by an innings and 79 runs at Edgbaston on Saturday to win the County Championship, their ninth title and first since 2021.

Warwickshire thrashed Leicestershire by an innings and 79 runs at Edgbaston on Saturday to seal the Rothesay County Championship, their ninth title and their first since 2021.

Victory was wrapped up shortly after lunch on the third day, inside eight sessions. Warwickshire began the day needing seven wickets, with Leicestershire requiring 182 more runs to force the hosts to bat again.

Chris Woakes struck early, bowling Sol Budinger for 47 and dismissing Jonathan Tattersall, caught by Rob Yates at slip. Ethan Bamber then claimed Ben Cox and Ben Green in quick succession, while captain Ed Barnard trapped Ian Holland lbw. Ajaz Patel was bowled by Manav Suthar before Bamber ended a defiant final-wicket stand by bowling Tom Scriven for 49 to seal the title.

Bamber finished with five for 52 and Woakes three for 38 in the second innings, after the pair had shared seven wickets in the first. Leicestershire were bowled out for 125 and 168, while Warwickshire’s 372 was built on Sam Hain’s 142 and Barnard’s 88.

No Leicestershire batter scored a half-century in the match as the visitors bowed out of Division One, and the triumph was celebrated by a large and jubilant home crowd.
