West Indies smash record 405/7 against India as three batters hit centuries

John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries as West Indies posted 405/7 against India in Guwahati — their highest-ever ODI total and the first 400-plus score in their history.

West Indies rewrote their one-day record books on Wednesday, posting 405 for 7 against India in the second ODI at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati — their highest-ever total in the format and the first time they have crossed 400, NDTV reported.

John Campbell set the tone after India won the toss and chose to field, smashing 101 off 68 balls with nine fours and five sixes. Captain Shai Hope anchored the innings with 104 off 94 balls, and Amir Jangoo provided the late fireworks with 114 off just 77 balls, striking 13 fours and three sixes. It is the first time three West Indies batters have scored centuries in the same ODI innings.

The feat has happened only six times in nearly 5,000 men’s ODIs — South Africa have done it three times, Australia and England once each — and West Indies are only the second team to do it against India, after South Africa’s 438 for 4 at the Wankhede in 2015, Sportstar noted. Hope and Jangoo added 182 for the third wicket.

Kuldeep Yadav was India’s best bowler with 2 for 65 and reached 200 ODI wickets during the innings, Outlook’s live blog reported. India, missing Jasprit Bumrah on Asian Games duty and a rested Mohammed Siraj, were set 406 to win. India lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram by eight wickets on September 27, chasing 296 with centuries from Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.
