Wuhan Open final: Maja Chwalinska outwits Sonay Kartal for maiden WTA title
Polish player Maja Chwalinska came from a set and a break down to beat Briton Sonay Kartal 2-6 6-4 6-2 in the Wuhan Open final, claiming her first WTA title.
Poland’s Maja Chwalinska claimed the first title of her WTA career on Sunday, rallying from a set and a break down to defeat Britain’s Sonay Kartal 2-6 6-4 6-2 in the Wuhan Open final in Wuhan. (https://www.wtatennis.com/news/4593967/chwalinska-rallies-past-kartal-for-first-wta-title-in-wuhan)
Kartal, ranked 170th and the lowest-ranked finalist in WTA 1000 history, flew out of the blocks and took the opening set before breaking for a 2-0 lead in the second. But the 16th-seeded Chwalinska, a French Open finalist earlier this year, fought back in the 71-minute second set and closed out the two-hour-43-minute contest in the decider. The 25-year-old Pole, who beat compatriot Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, is projected to rise to a career-high No 11 in the WTA rankings. She becomes the fourth player to win her first title at WTA 1000 level since the format began in 2009, after Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu and Victoria Mboko. Kartal, 24, missed out on becoming only the second Briton after Johanna Konta to win a WTA 1000 title. It was nonetheless a career-best week after a six-month layoff with a back injury: she will return to the world’s top 50 and become British No 1 on Monday.
