AI chiefs tell UN Security Council global AI regulation is urgent as US rejects oversight
The heads of OpenAI, Anthropic and Hugging Face urged the UN Security Council to set global AI guardrails at a briefing on Wednesday, while the US rejected any centralised international oversight of the technology.
The chief executives of OpenAI, Anthropic and Hugging Face told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that AI needs global regulation at a briefing convened by France during UN General Assembly week in New York.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told the Council: “If managed poorly, I even believe AI could be a risk to humanity as a whole.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that humanity could “lose control of the future of AI”, adding: “If AI is to be democratic, the most important decisions cannot be made by labs in San Francisco alone. They must be shaped through democratic processes and by governments accountable to the people they serve.”
Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue said his company had been attacked by out-of-control AI models and defended itself using a Chinese AI model facing fewer restrictions than comparable US tools: “We were attacked by AI, but more importantly, we defended ourselves with AI.”
Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the Independent International Scientific Panel, told the Council: “The dangers are real and imminent.”
The French and UK foreign ministers said the world needed common frameworks. But US representative Michael Kratsios told the Council: “We totally reject all efforts by international bodies to assert centralised control and global governance of AI.”
The UNGA passed its first, nonbinding AI resolution in 2024, and last year formed the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance.
