Alphabet’s Google Cloud on Thursday unveiled the Gemini agent, a single AI agent for work that can answer questions, handle tasks, create content and write code, pitching it as an autonomous worker for the enterprise (Reuters).

The agent plans the work, uses tools, connects to a company’s business systems and returns finished work inside documents, email and developer environments (Reuters). It works directly inside Google Workspace apps including Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, and can also be used through Microsoft 365 and Slack (Reuters).

Google says the agent picks the best model for each task, currently running on its own Gemini models and Anthropic’s Claude models, with other models to be added later (Reuters). Users can create “coworker agents” that act as team members with their own email address and access limited to the information they are given (Reuters). Versions built for financial services and legal work are now in preview, with government, healthcare and retail versions coming soon (Reuters).

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian described the agent at the company’s Gemini at Work 2026 event as a “single, universal agent for work” (Unite.AI). The launch follows OpenAI’s September release of always-on agents called “dots” and Meta’s “Muse” personal agent last month (Reuters).
